Where it all began…

There’s a beginning to every story, one that is told repeatedly and with additional flavours each time.

Here’s ours, but only with the original ingredients.

It was 2011, when a bunch of friends thought about taking a vacation together and how much fun it would be, if the plan actually materialized. Little did we think that it would! The plans were formulated late 2011 and by early 2012, we’d already made most of our bookings and we were combing the internet to buy the tickets for Tomorrowland!

Time was of essence and it was crucial to make the most of it(we had about 20 days in hand). Needless to say we were extremely ambitious and finally the plan was to start our journey in Belgium and end it in United Kingdom via Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Brugges, Belgium

In Belgium, we made Brussels our base camp and visited Ghent, Brugges and Boon (only to get to Tomorrowland!) from there. Ghent and Brugges are simply a train journey away and is a must visit if you’re in Brussels!

There’s an open theater by the market square in Brugges where crowds gather during evening to watch performances. There was a band playing some kick ass music that evening.

Soon after, we rented a car and drove to Freiburg, Germany. We loved this little town, especially the cafe atop a hill with beer mugs bigger than our faces! Our next stop was Milan, via Rheinfalls and Zurich. The magnificence and the roar of the water at Rheinfalls was certainly worth the visit.

After a night’s rest, we were on our way to Florence and spent 3 days there. Florence is a beautiful city of elegance and opulence. We felt beautiful just walking through the streets and eating the amazing food! Climbing the endless flight of stairs to get to the top of the Duomo certainly made sure we burned off all the calories.

We also made a day trip to Greve in Chianti for a wine tasting tour and visited the UNESCO world heritage site San Gimignano, a medieval hill town in the province of Sienna.

After Florence, we drove straight to Livorno via Pisa. We were amazed to see how much the tower really leaned!

In Livorno, we spent couple of days on a boat and breakfast. Highlight of this visit was going on a cruise, jumping into the Tyrrhenian Sea for a swim, falling asleep on the deck and still swaying when we got off the boat and made our way to Rome!

Rome was our last destination in Europe before we dropped the car and made our way to London. As it has been said very often “Rome is a city where the past and the present converge in perfect harmony. Known also as the Eternal City, it is easy to exaggerate when describing this city”. We found nothing but truth in these words and we marveled at the architectural, artistic, cultural and religious heritage. Make sure you don’t miss a tour of the city by night – it is beyond beautiful.

Finally, we spent a few days in London and made our way back home with a lot of memories that will last a lifetime, simply because this was our first all friends international vacation. This was planned by us after much research and literally scouring the earth for the best deals. We had as much fun planning the vacation for ourselves and our friends, as the vacation itself, so much so that we decided to make a business out of our passion for travel and selling our experiences. Thus was born Fernweh Holidays Pvt Ltd.
